Hello Fodorite friends. I'm planning a potential return trip to New Zealand for the end of the year, focused on the North Island. We are interested in exploring Tongariro National Park but are unsure about the best base to stay at for easy access to the park's highlights. We're considering Taupo and National Park Village but are open to other suggestions. Does anyone have experience staying in these areas or others nearby? We're looking for a good mix of convenience, comfort, and access to the park's trails and sights. Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated!
