We’re spending a few days in Ghent in early May and looking for the best places to eat and drink. I’ve heard the city has a great food scene, but I’m not sure where to start. Does anyone have favourite eating places or bars they’d recommend? I’m especially interested in places with local character and maybe some hidden gems that aren’t too touristy. Also, any must-try dishes or drinks while we’re there?

Ghent is a foodie paradise! For a truly local experience, try 't Oud Clooster—it’s cozy, serves hearty Belgian dishes, and has a great beer selection. If you’re into street food, don’t miss the Flemish stew or a classic Belgian waffle from a local vendor. For drinks, head to Dulle Griet—it’s famous for its 500+ beer varieties and the quirky tradition of taking your shoe as a deposit for their giant beer glasses. Have you thought about exploring the Graslei area for waterside dining with a view?
