We're planning a trip that includes a visit to Cinque Terre in May 2025, and we're trying to decide whether to stay in Genoa or La Spezia. Our group has diverse interests, from exploring historic sites to enjoying the local cuisine and, of course, taking in the stunning views of Cinque Terre. For those who have been, which city offers better access to Cinque Terre, and what are the pros and cons of staying in each? We're also curious about the vibes of both cities – is one more suited for a group with varied interests?

Both Genoa and La Spezia have their unique charms, but for a trip focused on Cinque Terre, La Spezia might be the more practical choice. It's closer to the Cinque Terre villages, making day trips easier and less time-consuming. La Spezia itself has a laid-back vibe with a beautiful waterfront and some interesting museums, though it's less historic than Genoa. Genoa, on the other hand, is a treasure trove of history and culture, with its stunning old town and delicious seafood. However, it's a bit farther from Cinque Terre, which could mean longer travel times. If your group values convenience and proximity to Cinque Terre, La Spezia could be the better base. But if you're keen on immersing yourselves in a city rich with history and don't mind the extra travel, Genoa offers a deeper dive into Italian culture. What's more important for your group: convenience or cultural immersion?
