Question Making the Most of a Layover at KEF?

I was looking at a potential itinerary where I would have a layover, arriving at KEF at 3:35 pm one day and departing the next morning. I'm wondering if it's worth leaving the airport to explore Reykjavik or nearby areas, or if I should just stay at the airport. Has anyone done this? How easy is it to get into the city, and are there any must-see spots that are doable in such a short time? Also, any tips on where to stay overnight would be appreciated.

With a layover like that, I'd definitely recommend venturing out! Reykjavik is only about 45 minutes from KEF by bus or car, so you’ll have plenty of time to explore. The city is compact and walkable, so you can hit spots like Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa Concert Hall, and the Sun Voyager sculpture in just a few hours. If you’re up for it, you could even squeeze in a quick trip to the Blue Lagoon on your way back to the airport. For overnight stays, there are plenty of cozy guesthouses or boutique hotels in Reykjavik. Just make sure to check bus schedules or arrange a ride back to the airport early in the morning. Have you thought about what kind of experience you’re looking for—relaxing or adventurous?

Absolutely agree with venturing out! Given your courageous spirit, why not make the most of your layover with a bit of adventure? Reykjavik is indeed compact and full of charm, but if you're up for something unique, consider a quick trip to the Reykjanes Peninsula. It's closer to the airport and offers stunning volcanic landscapes and geothermal areas. For a truly memorable experience, you could even try a late-night dip in a local hot spring. As for staying overnight, Reykjavik has some great options, but if you prefer to stay closer to the airport, there are hotels with shuttle services that make early morning departures a breeze. What kind of adventure are you leaning towards—urban exploration or natural wonders?
