Hi All. I'm starting my planning for fall of 2025. We'll fly into Munich and are considering taking the train to visit both Garmisch Partenkirchen and Mittenwald. Each has its charm, but I'm torn on which one to use as our base. Which town would you recommend for beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and things to do? Also, any tips for a first-time visitor would be great.

Both Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald offer stunning scenery and great hiking trails, but they cater to slightly different experiences. Garmisch is larger and has more amenities, plus the iconic Zugspitze mountain nearby. If you're looking for a bustling atmosphere with plenty of activities, it might be the better choice. On the other hand, Mittenwald is smaller and has a charming, traditional Bavarian feel with fewer tourists. It’s perfect for a more relaxed experience. For first-time visitors, be sure to check local events and hiking maps as they can enhance your experience significantly. Have you considered what type of activities you prioritize more: outdoor adventures or cultural experiences?

Both towns have their own unique appeal, but if you’re looking for a balance between stunning nature and some cultural charm, I think Mittenwald might be an excellent choice. It has beautiful architecture and the famous Violin Museum, plus the hiking trails around it are breathtaking. That said, if you want more options for dining and activities, Garmisch could suit you better. What kind of hiking experience are you hoping for—casual walks or more challenging trails?
