We're planning to visit Catherine’s Palace and Peterhof during our trip to St. Petersburg and are considering doing it on our own instead of joining a tour. I've heard Rick S. has some useful tips for navigating these sites independently. Has anyone here done this? How was your experience with transportation, ticket lines, and getting around the palaces? Any particular tips or must-see spots within these locations that you'd recommend?

Visiting Catherine’s Palace and Peterhof on your own can be a wonderfully romantic experience! For transportation, I’d recommend taking the hydrofoil to Peterhof—it’s scenic and adds to the adventure. At Catherine’s Palace, try to arrive early to avoid long ticket lines, and don’t miss the Amber Room—it’s breathtaking. Have you thought about packing a small picnic to enjoy in the gardens? It’s a lovely way to soak in the beauty together.
